In the vast presence of Guru Dattatreya, where all three Shaktis—icchā, jñāna, and kriyā—flow as a single pulse, one form stands radiant and immeasurable: Anaghā Lakṣmī, the flawless power, the pure will, the untainted bridge between the human and the divine. She is not merely a goddess beside Dattatreya; she is the real image of His cosmic intention, the Shakti who carries His fragrance into creation. And yet, the deeper truth whispered in the Śrīpāda Śrīvallabha Charitāmṛta is even more astonishing:
Without the will of Anaghā, even Anaghā Lakṣmī will not perform the smallest act.
This cryptic line reveals the mystery that the text repeatedly hints at: Anaghā Lakṣmī is much more than a beneficent deity. She is the living conduit between the devotee’s personality and their own divine nature, the inner mother who awakens the Guru’s grace in the heart.

The Shakti Who Mirrors the Divine in Us
In Chapter 43 of Charitāmṛta, Śrī Bhāskarāya Śāstrī explains that Anaghā Lakṣmī embodies the Śrīvidyā Māyā of Śrīpāda Śrīvallabha—not illusion in the sense of delusion, but the luminous veil through which the Absolute reveals itself compassionately to the seeker. She is the Māyā that does not bind, but awakens.
This is why she is described as Anaghā—“stainless, unblemished, untouched by guṇas.”
To approach her is to approach your own unconditioned consciousness.
For the ordinary devotee drowning in life’s complexity, Anaghā Lakṣmī becomes the intermediary, the interpreter of divine truth. She takes the unknowable vastness of Dattatreya and brings it close enough for the human heart to feel, receive, and transform. Without her, the brilliance of the Guru would be too blinding; with her, it becomes nectar.
This aligns with the Charitāmṛta’s subtle teaching that Dattatreya’s grace descends only when the seeker becomes aligned with Anaghā’s purity. She is the gateway, the doorway, and the gentle hand pulling the devotee across the threshold.
The Will Behind the Shakti
Devotees often pray to Anaghā Lakṣmī as the giver of prosperity, clarity, and liberation—but the Charitāmṛta reveals another dimension. Anaghā Lakṣmī has her own inner will, her own cosmic resolve, which precedes even her own action.
It is said:
“Without the will of Anaghā, Anaghā Lakṣmī herself does not act.”
This paradox is the secret of Shakti worship.
In Shakti Upāsanā, Shakti is not a mere power or energy. She is awareness with intention, consciousness with direction. The will of Anaghā is the primordial vibration that sets even divine action into motion. This is why in the Charitāmṛta, Śrīpāda allows certain miracles only when the inner will of Anaghā permits it. When the devotee’s karmic alignment, receptivity, and purity meet that inner will, grace flows effortlessly.
In other words, Anaghā Lakṣmī is both the power and the permission behind creation.
She is the Mother who moves the universe not through force but through quiet, unfailing intention—an intention so subtle that even other divine forms respond to it.
The Intermediary Between the Human Heart and Divine Consciousness
The Charitāmṛta describes Śrīpāda as the embodiment of the Trimūrti and the source of all Siddhas, yet devotees repeatedly approach him through Anaghā Lakṣmī’s compassion. In many episodes, Śrīpāda reveals that the devotee’s transformation did not occur solely through His grace but through Anaghā’s inner motherly acceptance.
This is the foundation of the statement found in Nath and Datta traditions:
Anaghā Lakṣmī is the intermediary between the jīva and Īśvara.
Why?
Because the mind is restless, but the heart is soft. The ego resists surrender, but the Mother’s presence melts it effortlessly.
When the devotee invokes Anaghā Lakṣmī, they are invoking:
- The purification of their intentions
- The alignment of their will with divine will
- The dissolving of the personality’s distortions
- The awakening of the soul’s natural luminosity
In essence, she does not “carry prayers to God.” She transforms the devotee until they become eligible to receive the Guru’s full radiance. She is the alchemist of the inner world.
A Personal Reflection: When the Mother Becomes the Path
As a devotee of Dattatreya and Anaghā Lakṣmī, I have often felt that the Guru’s grace arrives in two distinct waves:
First, Anaghā Lakṣmī softens the heart, dissolves confusion, and aligns the mind with clarity.
Then, Dattatreya’s boundless compassion enters effortlessly, like moonlight filling a window already opened.
In moments of prayer, I felt that it was Anaghā Lakṣmī who first held my fragmented intentions and wove them into something worthy of divine attention. She is the Mother who understands the human struggle—not as weakness, but as the raw material of awakening.
This is why Śrīpāda insisted on the practice of Anaghā Vratam. The vrata is not merely a ritual; it is a process that reconstructs the devotee’s inner world until they become capable of receiving Śrīpāda’s infinite mercy.
When you invoke Anaghā Lakṣmī, you are saying:
“Mother, shape my will so it resembles Your will.”
And this is the deepest meaning behind the mystical line:
Without the will of Anaghā, Anaghā Lakṣmī will not do even a small task.
For the devotee, this means:
“Divine action begins only when inner purity aligns with cosmic intention.”
In Shakti Upasana, She Is the Axis
In the language of Shakti, Anaghā Lakṣmī is:
- The Seed (bīja)
- The Path (upāya)
- The Power (śakti)
- The Permission (anujñā)
- The Result (phala)
She is both the cause and the fulfiller.
Both the mirror and the reflection.
Both the devā and the devī within us.
To worship her is to worship the stainless core of one’s own consciousness.

Anaghā Lakṣmī is not simply the divine consort of Dattatreya; she is the living, breathing will behind all divine movement. She is the Mother who stands between our limited personality and our limitless Self, holding our hand as we cross the bridge of transformation.
To approach her is to approach one’s own untouched divinity.
To worship her is to be restored to wholeness.
To surrender to her is to be carried into the heart of Dattatreya.
